Much of that career took place at the boutique law firm Jonathan managed for more than 20 years, a firm focused on restructuring and reorganization matters. He led its operations directly while maintaining an active and voluminous caseload, working with clients, interested parties, other professionals, and court institutions through reorganizations and court-supervised proceedings. Running a specialized firm for two decades called for considerable operational oversight, astute client advisory work, leadership, and matter-level strategy. Jonathan Pasternak was named the YJP Professional of the Year in 2017 in recognition of his long-term contributions to restructuring initiatives, and he received other notable accolades as well, all while continuing his commitment to commercial real estate, distressed debt, and finance-driven restructurings. He was a Super Lawyer for more than 15 consecutive years, and his many leadership roles have earned him considerable industry recognition. He has lectured at numerous industry conferences and at his former secondary and law schools. Throughout his career, he has been routinely sought for interviews and quotes on large-scale restructurings and has appeared on radio and television.
Education has been a significant influence on his professional and personal life, shaping both his later career direction and his current commitments. He graduated cum laude from The Pingry School with the class of 1981 and was a member of Brown University's class of 1985, where he majored in American History and Literature. He served as a class representative for both schools, coordinating alumni and class-based initiatives, and he keeps active ties with the Pingry and Brown communities today. His spouse and two of his three children are Brown graduates, so the family's alumni involvement extends into ongoing participation and outreach.
Community service is another long-standing commitment. Jonathan served for 11 years on the Board of Trustees of Temple Sinai of Bergen County as one of the board's longest-serving trustees, with oversight of governance, planning, and fiduciary responsibilities. Few individuals have held that position for as long as he has. He contributes to numerous charities and community efforts, including food and clothing drives and educational organizations, and he regularly donates to community initiatives launched by Pingry School, Brown University, and Tenafly, New Jersey, where he resides, aligning his philanthropy with the institutions that have played important roles in his development. Through various not-for-profit institutions, he actively supports educational, religious, and charitable initiatives. He has also provided pro bono legal services throughout his career to individuals, small businesses, and local not-for-profit organizations.
Outside of his professional life, Jonathan Pasternak is an accomplished musician and performer who is well known among his professional peers. Music remains an active pursuit and adds a creative dimension to his career. He relishes the preparation, timing, and technical control that performing demands, and he finds those disciplines as rewarding as the skills he has employed throughout his restructuring career. He is a well-known archivist and field recorder for live music and concerts, and he has donated significant time to Tenafly and the community, coaching at recreational and travel levels and performing at community events.
Across commercial real estate, distressed debt, and corporate finance, his work has centered on financially distressed environments where legal judgment and business evaluation are often intertwined.
